Its surrealist overtones are perfectly matched by the illustrations by Dali whom the author had met in Rome in the late 1930s. A macabre tale by the pioneering Swiss fantasy author Maurice Sandoz 1892-1958 and later the basis for a 1953 horror film of the same name.

Complete with the very good price-clipped dustwrapper which has toning loss to the head and foot of the spine minor loss and nicks to the extremities a two inch tear to the foot of the spine and a small repair to the reverse of the front flap. The contents remain clean and bright throughout free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. A fine copy the binding square and firm with just very minor bumping to the tips of the spine. Preserved in a custom brown cloth clamshell box lined with attractive geometric patterned paper and with titles in gilt to the spine. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 12 black and white full page plates by Dali. Publisher's original blue-grey cloth decorated in a stylised maze design with the centre square in red and titles in gilt with dustwrapper designed by Dali.
